Welfare‑farming centers on the Five Freedoms: freedom from hunger and thirst, freedom from thermal and physical discomfort, freedom from pain, injury and disease, freedom from fear and distress, and freedom to express natural behaviours.

While safeguarding the physical health of poultry, this farming system also meets their behavioural and psychological needs. It is not simply free‑range raising. Large‑scale production can be achieved with automated equipment, making welfare‑farming an upgrading trend for the egg‑laying poultry industry. Its three mainstream rearing models are enriched cages, multi‑tier non‑cage aviary systems and free‑range pasture‑raising.
